چکیده
100 cases of extradural spinal compression comprising 74% of all cases of spinal compression were included. ver-tebral and extravertebral compression occurred with equal frequency. 1. most of tjhe cases occurred between 20-50 years of age, with no significant dif'fe'rerlce1s between various causes, except in vertebral hemangioma which tend o affect the younger age groups (10-20). males were commonly affected. 2. the dorsal region was the' commonest site encountered. 3. all patients showed the picture of progressive paraplegia with a sensory level. the initial symptom was pain, root or local pain, in almost two-thirds of the patients. tenderness over the spine favoured the diagnosis of a vertebral lesion or an inflammatory condition. 4. vertebral lesions were usually evident on plain radiography 5. myelographic diagnosis was found to be more accurate in the cervical and dorsal regions (85%) than in the lumbar region. 6. pott's paraplegua formed 20% of the cases. lamincetomy in these cases mostly mid-dorsal was thought to giv.e a better access for decompression in the cord, rather than costotransversectomy or antero lateral decompression. 7. operation followed by irradiation was thought to be a better treatment than irradiation alone. 8. chondromas were found to have a tendency to recur. it is thought that was due to 'incomplete removal rather than due to malignant transformation. 9. vertebral lesions, suspected to be secondary deposits, with no apparent primary focus, were explored for decompression and verification. 10. decompression of the cord in cases of dorsal disc prolapse was found to a safer procedure. 11. two cases of localised extradural abscess secondry to lumbar puncture encountered. 12. elxtr-adural angioma and angio-endothelicma comprised 14%. partial or complete excision followed by irradiation gave satisfactory result. 13. more than half the cases of extradural neurofibromas had extra spinal

متن کاملVentral extradural spinal meningeal cyst causing cord compression: neurosurgical treatment.
Spinal extradural meningeal cysts are typically formed by a thin fibrotic membranous capsule, macroscopically similar that of an arachnoid membrane, filled by cerebro spinal fluid and related to a nerve root or to the posterior midline. Ventral location is extremely rare and when it occurs they usually cause spinal cord herniation through the ventral dural gap. A 61 year-old man who began with ...
متن کاملHodgkin's lymphoma presenting as extradural spinal cord compression.
OBJECTIVES Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting with spinal cord compression is rare. Reports estimate that only 5% of patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma have spinal cord compression. The objectives of this study were:- (1) To review the histology of all cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma causing spinal cord compression. (2) To correlate the findings with the clinical details- lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomega...
متن کاملMalignant extradural spinal cord compression in men with prostate cancer.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Malignant epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC) is a dreaded complication of malignancy and is fortunately not common. Approximately 7% of men dying of prostate cancer will have at least one episode of MESCC during their lifetime. Treatment needs to be individualized and estimating the prognosis is critical to achieving a balance between effectiveness therapy and the burden...
متن کاملSpinal Extradural Arachnoid Cyst
A spinal extradural arachnoid cyst (SEAC), which is mostly found at the thoracic spine, is a rare disease, accounting for approximately 1% to 3% of spinal tumors. SEAC patients are generally men in their 20’s, 30’s, or 50’s. SEACs are most commonly found in the middle or lower thoracic spine, and less frequently found in the lumbar region, although they can be detected at any lesion of the spin...
متن کاملSpinal Extradural Arachnoid Cyst
A 48-year-old male presented with progressive leg weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography myelography showed an extradural arachnoid cyst extending from the T-12 to L-2 levels in the thoracolumbar region. The cyst was confirmed at surgery and completely removed. This surgical intervention achieved improvement in the neurological symptoms.
